how to bend wood for a barrel
Water bending involves soaking the unbent barrel in hot water, typically at temperatures just below or at boiling from 10 to 30 minutes (depends on the cooperage) to soften the wood. with fire bending, the staves are usually placed over a fire pot for 10 to 20 minutes to soften the wood. after bending, the barrels are toasted.. If i only bend the wood in one direction, i would have to start out with a fairly thick plank to end up with the curve needed, but i am sure that is how barrels are made. i also agree that oak may have been a better choice for bending. i have not read anything about bending cedar other than in boat building.. A delren piece of material will bear against the barrel’s ventilated rib’s foot: and a 1/2″ screw will apply the pressure needed to bend the barrel. with my john deere green barrel bending jig (bbj), a couple boxes of shotgun shells and my low shooting shotgun….off to the range i go!. how to bend wood for a barrel
